Books

I just finished reading the "Hatchet" a story about a boy who survives in the Canadian wild for over a month with you guessed it, a hatchet. I will be teaching this novel in the fall. It is a great book, but what really annoys me (and for those of you who really want to read it and don't want me to wreck the ending- warning) is that the day he manages to get the survial kit that was in the sunken plane and he's cooking up his first real meal, he gets rescued. That part probably would have put me into shock... For 50 days he manages to survive on berries, fish and small game and then he's cooking up a beef dinner and before he even gets to taste it, a dude on a float plane lands...

I like that ending. It shows that the true reward wasn't the beef dinner, it was the fact that he reached that point - alive, and with skills. Chicks dig skills.
